Desire to Separate: Uranus in the Birth Chart (Pt. 3: Houses 7, 8, 9)

7th House Uranus, 8th House Uranus, 9th House Uranus
Uranus in the 8th House: “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Hieronymus Bosch (1495-1505)

[This is a continuation of the previous post]. In the following post, I will address 7th House Uranus, 8th House Uranus, and 9th House Uranus in the birth chart:

 Uranus in 7th House:

There is a proclivity for inviting unusual, inconsistent, or disrupted relationships to one’s living experience. The “other” would often be the target of a psychological “projection”, being perceived by the individual as the one who is “unsteady”, “unpredictable” or “unfeeling” whereas the individual would usually disown any such tendencies in himself or herself. Therefore, the presence of Uranus in a section of the chart that is traditionally associated with the “other” may indicate a “chasm” in the psyche of the individual, which would bring forth a split between what is “norm” (i.e. the individual) versus what is “deviating” (i.e. the “other”).

In this case, the individual would usually tend to attribute to the “other” all that he or she (himself or herself) is not, in order to be able to then side with what would “define” himself or herself as “reliable” or “self-consistent”, as motioning towards “consistency” seems to be the ultimate goal of the psyche. Thus for an individual with Uranus in the Seventh House, the most difficult task would be gaining consciousness of this de facto psychological division and the projective nature of his or her experience of the “other”.

7th House Uranus on the DC:

If Uranus is close to the Descendant and challenged (and the chart is not lightened up by an angular Sun, Jupiter, or a stellium in fire signs), the individual may come across as callous, calculating, or strange. In social contexts, others may perceive the individual as “irritating” in some way, or they may not readily respond to the individual’s friendly gestures and good-heartedness. The proximity of Uranus to the Descendant may thus symbolize an unconscious invitation to be “rejected” by the “other” so that the individual can fall back on his or her own psychological “strength” in building an authentic “self-image” (via the polarity point of Ascendant) independent of what the “other” says or thinks.

From an evolutionary point of view, this placement may also indicate past life cycles of personal “inconsistency” which perhaps caused a degree of suffering to others, and therefore, in this lifetime the individual is being asked to “move away” from inconsistent behavior through a psychological “polarization” in relation to the “other” (e.g. “My partner is so unstable that I have to remain stable”). This may also explain why the “other” often seems to bring “inconsistency” to the life of an individual with this placement, for if this were not the case, the individual could never evolve from the unconscious conditioning of past life cycles into a conscious understating of the necessity of “balance” and “dependability” in human relationships.

Challenges of the 7th House Uranus:

A challenged Uranus in the Seventh House, in general, may hint at the possibility of past life traumatic experiences regarding partnerships, close friendships, and any form of contractual arrangements. The soul may carry disturbing memories of having been abandoned at the marriage altar, having been “compromised” in marriage, or having been impelled to marry despite one’s own will. As a result of heartbreak, the individual might have thus fallen into a “vicious circle” of hurting the “other” by staying detached or by depriving the “other” of justice, respect or affection, therefore hurting himself or herself in the process as well, by electing to stay alone or unattached.

Alternatively, the past life “sore point” might be related to a social context, such as being excluded from a gathering, festivity, or a social event the individual had highly hoped to attend. Feeling overshadowed as a result of marriage to someone wealthier, more intelligent, or more influential is another possibility. Either case, a consciousness of the nature of such an “other-oriented” trauma is necessary for the individual to be able to move out of the “vicious circle” of “reacting” and thus perpetuating such traumatic experiences (e.g. “I am going to stay detached because they are detached” or “He/She is the crazy one, so I am the one holding this relationship together”). Healing often takes place when the individual starts re-orienting himself or herself towards the “totality” of their personality, rather than maintaining a “partial” identification with what they “like” in themselves while projecting the rest onto the “other”.

Blessings of the 7th House Uranus:

If Uranus is comfortable in the Seventh House, there usually exists a higher chance of interacting with the “other” through an “objective” lens, seeing the nature of such interaction as merely human and thus inevitably fallible. In such a case, there would also exist a higher chance of recovery from any possible heartbreak that may initially seem to be inflicted by the “other”. The individual can come to an understanding that any apparent “disruption” in a relationship has served a purpose, contributing to the individual’s personal path of growth and evolution.

The best example of this energy would be the character of Nora in A Doll’s House, created by the Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen. The discord in Nora’s marriage ultimately “wakes” her up from the dream of having had the perfect relationship, and in the face of such a crisis, she eventually chooses to stay true to herself and leave, rather than betraying herself and stay.

Uranus in 8th House:

There is a predisposition towards sexual and emotional liaisons which allow a degree of freedom, detachment, or unconventionality. The individual may attract partners who display Uranian qualities in their sexual behavior or psychological conditioning, i.e. they may have a desire for self-satisfaction or voyeurism, may be quite eccentric or extraordinary, or may simply be solitary figures who can endure (and enjoy) long periods of isolation. Alternatively, one may exercise “emotional detachment” (if Uranus is stressed in the chart) or a healthy degree of “objectivity” (if Uranus is in a good condition) with regards to sexual encounters in general.

With Uranus situated in the House of intimacy, there usually exists an attraction towards “experimental” or “unconventional” sexual arrangements (unless, of course, the chart is highly Saturnian). For example, an individual with this placement might find it easier to be in an “open” relationship, get engaged in threesomes, or practice partner-swapping.

On the other hand, if Uranus is challenged in this position, the individual may unconsciously get “stressed” and therefore “detached” during sexual intercourse, either with an intimate partner or in an experimental situation. In this case, the soul may have a tendency to attract partners who can be categorized as “ethereal” rather than “carnal” (they live at a distance, travel often, are highly spiritual, or are sexually impotent, for example), guaranteeing that the individual would not have to engage in sex very often, thus reducing the unconscious “stress” level the individual may feel during a sexual encounter.

The consciousness of this process is very important, as the individual may start thinking that he or she is “doomed” to end up with “cold”, “absent”, or “sexually dysfunctional” partners, while in reality, it is his or her own unconscious defense mechanism that is guarding him or her against re-encountering the sexual trauma that the soul may have experienced in a past life cycle.

Challenges of the 8th House Uranus:

If Uranus is challenged in the Eighth House, the soul may carry unconscious memories of past life or early childhood trauma hinting at sexual or physical abuse at the hands of family members or intimate others. Unconscious memories of spousal rape, incest, or sexual slavery may be prevalent in the psyche of the individual, thus sabotaging the possibility of establishing a fulfilling, trusting, and loving intimate connection with the “other” in the current life cycle. The individual might have experienced a severe “breach of trust” with regards to shared finances, children, or conjugal bond in a past life cycle, therefore, in the current life, he or she may not be able to “trust” others enough to be able to “share” his or her body, bank account, or long-term plans with them.

It is predictable that such individuals would be reluctant to get engaged in any process implying any degree of “mutuality” (such as getting married or having children) if they stay unconscious of the nature of traumatic memories they may be harboring with regards to establishing “intimacy” with the “other”. Psychosexual therapy can prove especially valuable in this case, as well as past life regression, counseling, and hypnosis.

Blessings of the 8th House Uranus:

If Uranus is comfortable in the Eighth House, there usually exists an unbiased “understanding” of the nature of sexual connection and emotional intimacy. The individual would tend to recognize the “limits” of such bonds and would not usually look for “salvation” through sex (unless, of course, the chart is highly Neptunian). Such individuals have a “healthy curiosity” about sexual possibilities and they are often able to stay objective and guard their emotions even if they are experimenting with a variety of sexual arrangements.

There is also a “scientific” approach towards sex in general, enabling these individuals to openly address topics that may be awkward for others to touch upon. This can also help the individual invite “authenticity” in partners and/or “diagnose” any sexual issue which may exist in relation to those partners, as the “psychological vibe” of such individuals encourages “openness” and “truthfulness” in others, which is always favorable for any relationship, be it a casual encounter or a long-term arrangement.

Uranus in 9th House:

The soul has a tendency to seek her own moral axioms outside of the established, traditional religion or culture. There is a desire to establish a unique, personal connection to what is understood as “God” or cosmos. A constant search for “truth” may push the individual to creative arenas, in hopes of getting closer to that perfect understanding of the “bigger picture”, which, nonetheless, seems to be beyond the full grasp of the soul (Woody Allen and his constant philosophical search for “truth” reflected in his movies would be a great example of this placement).

Challenges of the 9th House Uranus:

If Uranus is challenged, however, the soul may have been traumatized in a past life cycle with regards to matters of truth and belief. This may have ranged from religious persecution to being burnt at stake for witchcraft or being accused of blasphemy and subsequently tortured.

Alternatively, one may carry unconscious traumatic memories with regards to not being able to establish oneself in a foreign land or being ill-treated by foreigners. Johann Friedrich Struensee in the Danish movie A Royal Affair (based on historical facts) would be a great example of this energy: in a Uranian attempt to “modernize” and “liberate” Denmark from the tyranny of censorship and poverty, the German doctor Johann Friedrich Struensee introduces radical changes to the laws and structure of the government, and in return, he is perceived as a traitor and horrendously executed at the age of 34.

Alternatively, the trauma might have taken place as a result of sudden disclosure of a “discrepancy” in the core beliefs of the individual, either in a past life cycle or in the first half of current life. This may include a dreadful realization that one’s cultural, racial, or religious “conditioning” does not point to “the whole truth”, or the spiritual teachers, religious figures, or political leaders whose words one has chosen to unquestionably “believe” do not hold credibility any longer. The individual, therefore, might have been “shocked” intellectually or philosophically in terms of his or her understanding of the “bigger picture”, and thus might have experienced an exasperating degree of “disorientation”, or in rare cases, a fall into “madness”.

The Uranian “idealism” with regards to the notion of “truth” and what is subsequently “right” or “wrong” can manifest itself to an extreme with this placement, therefore an awareness of the “partiality of truth” and the impossibility of attainment of “perfect knowledge” may help the individual stay in a healthier contact with his or her spiritual dimension.

Alternatively, if Uranus is challenged in this position, or if the ruler of 9th House or Jupiter is somehow associated with Uranus, a phobia of long-distance traveling, including cruising and flying may be present. The soul may carry unconscious memories of travel-related accidents, having got lost in a foreign land, or having been prevented from returning to the homeland after traveling abroad. An awareness of the fact that such phobias are indicators of past life events rather than predictors of current life’s trajectory may help the individual overcome these issues through past life regression, meditation, or therapeutic work.

Blessings of the 9th House Uranus:

If Uranus is comfortable in the Ninth House, however, the individual can usually assume the role of an impartial “observer” in relation to his or her own beliefs. Such individuals can often hold a healthy degree of “objectivity” with regards to the notion of “truth”, understanding that all human beings are destined to merely achieve a “subjective” awareness of “truth”, and therefore, there exists no moral obligation for searching, believing, or idealizing the abstract notion of a “whole and complete” Truth. This mentality would also help the individual respect other cultural, ideological, or religious points of view, without falling into a bias for or against them.

Consequently, such individuals would be able to go beyond the existing societal, racial, or religious prejudices and orient themselves through their own highly personal “moral compass” which would keep evolving throughout their entire life.

In the next post, I will address Uranus in Houses 10, 11, and 12 of the birth chart.

  1. I need some advice as well. I have Saturn in Cap (10), Uranus in Cap (9), and Neptune in Cap (10) – I’m wondering if I am to go on my own path, follow and empower my beliefs of success (I so desperately want to be a famous actor) and achieve success by listening to the inner voice inside of me

    1. Jordan, that’s a complicated question and your whole chart has to be taken into consideration.

  2. Hi, my Uranus is conjunct my Sun in Sagittarius. I was just commenting on another post about having it in the 4th house (long comment on that one lol). I just wanted to drop a quick line about how this explains a lot for me. I mentioned on that other comment that I have been obsessively seeking the “whole and complete” Truth before being able to “begin life” so to speak. It has been my Saturn return and Saturn transits (of my Sun and Uranus most recently, actually) that have helped me not only reconnect with my spirituality (I almost had that rare madness due to being raised in a very fundamental Christian environment and then going totally atheist following the family dramas I described.. not exactly because of them but around the same time), but also have a relativism that allows me to have faith that all truths are somehow true, which has helped a lot. I feel like all of these articles are describing my life in the past couple of years due to most of my planets falling in the 3rd/4th houses and Saturn transiting those houses the past several years. I’m so glad to see that in some cases I’ve intuitively been making the right changes, and this helps me put some puzzle pieces together towards understanding what all of these shifts have meant and identifying the real progress that I’ve apparently made! The many lessons have been stacked on top of each other. Almost not looking forward to turning 60 lol, although I’m incredibly grateful now that it’s almost through this time around! Thanks again! Love and peace and wonderful life experiences to you.

  3. Can definitely relate to your mistreated in foreign countries,…Uranus in the 9th….lots of treachery, attempted murder which I thought was all related to my Scorpio in the 12th stellium (Mars, Ascendant conjunct, Neptune, NN). My dominance is in Pluto (Scorpio) and I’ve been living in a Taurus place….lots of opposition…I am moving in a couple of months. What a relief that will be.

  4. I do definitely resonate with your take on Uranus in the 8th, from a purely personal perspective. I would add that this position can heighten awareness and understanding of others’ needs to express their own version(s) of sexuality, as well as giving the potential for an openness to others’ differences. The 8th has the ability to comprehend the 2nd house’s unspoken but very real need for materiality—mirror it back if you will—and is therefore capable of being open to the other’s physical needs and often very different versions of reality. I’m thinking specifically here of being open and understanding about trans-sexuality and/or all the other various colors in the rainbow of physical realities and needs.

  5. Hi Tina,
I am afraid I did not have long to spend on this, but here is what I found.

Russia (like me) has a 5th house Uranus which is prominent. Their county’s mundane chart has Sun Capricorn 3 conj NN 9 Capricorn conj Uranus 13 Capricorn conjunct Neptune. Very similar to the 1992 generation.

China, too has a 5th house Uranus at 4 Cancer square Sun 7 inconjunct Moon in the 1st in Aquarius. Moon conjuncts ASC in Aqu at 1 degree 44. So the ruler of the country is Uranus. This, naturally is communist China. But as historical China, which dates back at least 5,000 years characterized those that are not Chinese or are other, as barbarians. So if one could construct a chart for Han China one would expect a polarized Uranus in 7th-8th or 9th.

Australia has two charts. One for 1788 and one for 1901. The 1788 one has Uranus at 28 Cancer widely conjunct DESC in 1 degree Leo.

Great Britain’s chart for the union with Scotland is Uranus in 12th house conjunct Libra ASC. Uranus is square Uranus. I would expect the chart of William the Conqueror’s chart in 1066 to be a 7th/8th/9th Uranus.

Some 7th house Uranian people: Barak Obama, Napoleon, Oprah. freud and Russell crow ( and the gladiator who was good while his Roman enemy was very bad.) One can see the 7th house polarization in all these people very clearly.

On that note I will say goodnight from me.

  6. Hi Tina,

I loved your statements about your experiences of Uranus in the 7th, 8th and 9th houses. I have a client with Uranus in the seventh and have been working with him on a family tree to show him that his experience of the “other” as unfeeling is a family shadow where the men in his family in the last two generation attracted “unfeeling” wives. He has Uranus trine Sun (in Pisces) and he has NN in Aquarius, so he is finally taking responsibility for his shadow and his family shadow and his suppressed feelings (Moon in the 12 th house). This placement would be very interesting in a country’s chart. In my PhD on the relationships our Australian Aboriginal elders- men of high degree- want with non-Indigenous teachers who come to teach their children in their geographically remote school, the “white teachers” are constructed as feelingless and strange “others.” Yet these 20 teachers, whose average age is 20-24 come from the glitter strips of the Australian cities. Their facile knowledge and superficiality are in contrast to the hugely cultured and knowledgable Elders, who they see as odd and deviant. I always see Uranus as outre and these seventh house, eighth house and ninth house placements seem to be almost deviant and outre positions. So your writing fascinated me Tina. Thanks so much for your time and wisdom. I look forward to your weekly serving of wisdom. ~Hilary ~

    1. Dear Hilary, what you shared here regarding your client dealing with family “shadow” was fascinating… as well as your research on how the Aboriginal elders perceive the white teachers as the unfeeling “others”… I really enjoyed reading what you had written. As you mentioned, in the chart of a country, this placement would be quite interesting… I think countries which have Uranus (or Pluto) in 7th, 8th or 9th House are generally more prone to fall into “polarization” with regards to the “other”, even perhaps vilifying the “other” to a degree. In the chart of Iran, for example, Pluto is in the 7th and Uranus in the 8th House. It seems to me that the identity of the country has largely been defined via a “polarization” with “the West” onto which all “evil” has been projected. The US has Uranus right under Descendant, and again, it seems that US largely defines itself through its “relations” with the countries which seem to be “unstable” and need to be “fixed”. It would be interesting to research how the outer planets’ placement in the charts of different countries are reflected in their policy-making. Thanks again for sharing, and also for giving me food for thought 🙂

      1. Dear Tina,
Why am I not surprised by your wonderful revelations of “polarization” as a manifestation of Uranus in the 7th/8th and 9th as exemplified by the position of Uranus in the USA and Iranian chart. It was just an intuitive hunch I immediately saw. Although I have my time management set out today (in my Capricornian way), but I am going to deviate and look at Australia’s chart, England’s chart and Russia’s chart as right from “day one” – 26th Jan, 1788- Australia as a British colony situated “the natives” as “other”; the convicts who were the new citizens of “New South Wales” and the dross of Britian’s newly industrialised society were constructed as “other”; and even the geographical land which was olive green instead of emerald green and was dry, unforgiving and harsh was also painted as ‘other” by English artists. Australia is still seen as ‘other” by some of my snobby English relatives. I have convict ancestry, Australia aboriginal ancestry, outback ancestry and birth’ Irish ancestry and Mexican Indian ancestry so I am situated as “other by my snobbish rich Anglophile, free born ancestry; wealthy city born relatives so I am polarized in a big, Jupiterian way by my Sun in Capricorn opposition Jupiter close conjunction Uranus. As my Mercury is in Aquarius and I think “Uranian” I am outre by our polarized, largely pentacostalist nation. From an academic an archetypal- sociological -psychological -astrological vibration/level the whole concept of Uranian-deviant-outre-other is fascinating and it is magnified in the 7th/8th/ninth houses.
Thankyou again for your last offering of Uranus in the houses. I shall report back in regarding Great Britain, Australia and Russia’s Uranian house positions.

        Ciao for now

        ~Hilary~

        1. What a wonderful feedback to what I had written, Hilary! Do let me know of your thoughts on the countries you mentioned if you get a chance to examine their charts. Thanks again, for your brilliant responses to my posts… it’s always a delight to read your words.
